Concerts featured:

Songs included:

  • So Close… So Far Away
  • Greensleeves

Feedback:

The best way to experience the Derek Trucks Band is to listen to them live, so if they’re ever performing near you, I highly recommend going out to see them. You can also enjoy the hundreds of live shows available for download from the Live Music Archive. In addition, you can purchase Live At Georgia Theatre, a very high quality live recording, multi-tracked and studio mixed, from a variety of digital music providers such as the official Derek Trucks Band website, iTunes, and Hittin’ The Note.

Moving Away From Ourmedia (For Now)

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

Yesterday, I announced that I was moving the Radio DTB MP3s to ourmedia.org in order to guard against potentially large bandwidth bills should the podcast ever become super-popular. After playing with the ourmedia.org interface for a day, I’ve decided to move back to the way that I’ve been doing it so far and just continue to host the MP3 files myself. I think that what ourmedia.org is doing is great work and I hope that they are able to continue to provide free unlimited storage and bandwidth — if I start bumping up against my bandwidth limit, I’ll probably switch to them. But, for now, I enjoy the greater reporting capabilities I have when I host the files myself.

Again, this change should be completely transparent for users of the site. As always, feel free to send me feedback about any aspect of the site.

Radio DTB Mentioned on GoRadio

Monday, August 8th, 2005

Radio DTB got a mention on Episode #25 of the GoRadio podcast when Jeri and Nicole interviewed me in relationship with a contest I won on their podcast. Unfortuanely, they were experiencing some technical issues when they made the podcast and the overall audio is worse than it usually is for their podcast, so this particular episode is sometimes difficult to listen to. Jeri and Nicole were kind enough to let me talk about podcasting in general, where I gave a shout-out to two of my favorite other podcasts: Closet Deadhead and The Roadhouse. I also talked a little bit about what I’m doing here on Radio DTB. I made a notable error when I mentioned that Derek Trucks is in his early 20’s. Of course, he’s 26, which is more accurately categorazied as mid-20’s. If you’d like to hear the interview with me, grab the MP3 and fast-forward to about 48:56.

Moving To Ourmedia

Monday, August 8th, 2005

I’m making a change at Radio DTB that should be completely transparent — I’m moving the MP3s for the podcast to Ourmedia, a site that works in conjunction with The Internet Archive to provide “free storage and free bandwidth for your videos, audio files, photos, text or software. Forever. No catches.” I haven’t had any problems with storage or bandwidth yet, but I sill dream that Radio DTB will become popular enough (maybe if I got listed in iTunes, e.g.) that I will eventually worry about it so I’d like to go ahead and move the existing shows to a permanent location that will be able to handle it.

This change should not be noticable to any users, but if you do notice any problems at all getting the podcasts, let me know.

Aspen Times: Studio Experience

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

The Aspen Times has an article about the Derek Trucks Band’s upcoming album:

Studio Experience: Derek Trucks Explores Studio Possibilities

On the endless road that guitarist Derek Trucks has been traveling for some 10 years, the recording studio has been treated as “just another stop on the tour,” said the 26-year-old….

“It’s the first record I’ve done that I’ve listened to just to listen to,” said Trucks, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., whose side job since 1999 has been playing with his uncle Butch Trucks in the Allman Brothers Band. “It’s one of the few times we’ve left the studio feeling energized and pumped about it.”

The more I hear about this upcoming album, the more excited I get about it. I believe we’re looking at a February release. I can’t wait!

Website: Derek Trucks Band Tabs

Thursday, August 4th, 2005

Do you want to learn how to play guitar like Derek Trucks? Good luck!

Seriously, though, a great resource to start with is the Derek Trucks Band Tabs website, which has lyrics, chords, and tablature for lots of Derek Trucks Band music. I’ve added a link to the site to the “DTB Resources” blogroll that is available on the right column of every page on Radio DTB, so you’ll always be able to find it.

New Podcast: blueskyriverjams

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

I got an email today from “Jambandcountry” telling me about a podcast he produces: blueskyriverjams, a podcast that focuses on music from the Allman Brothers Band family, including the Derek Trucks Band:

Free traded music from groups like The Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, Derek Trucks Band, and Gov’t Mule. We also talk about the live music community and list tour dates and much much more. All music is trade friendly and basically just like a stream for people to preview songs from past shows.

Check out the blog and the podcast feed. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast myself yet, but it’s already queued up in my iTunes for listening to tomorrow.

JamBase: Summer Ripplefest 2005

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

JamBase has an article about Ripplefest 2005 that mentions the Derek Trucks Band:

Summer Ripplefest 2005

Headlining Friday night’s festivities was the Derek Trucks Band, who didn’t come on until almost 11 p.m. and raged until after 2 in the morning. Members of the Codetalkers, including Col. Bruce himself on “Fixin to Die,” made memorable appearances during the show, but the “Everything is Everything” toward the end was what blew the roof off for this fan. Derek’s non-emotional stoicism delivered a chilling blues funk while Mike Mattison’s perfectly fitting vocals pumped up the energy level. Taking the crowd late into the night, the Derek Trucks Band delivered a huge performance for this tiny venue.

Once I find a good copy of the Ripplefest show (the one currently on the Live Music Archive apparently has some issues), we can probably look forward to hearing a few cuts on an upcoming episode of Radio DTB.

New DTB Fan Website

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

I received an email from DTB fan Alan, telling me about a new fan website for the DTB that he’s created and introduce me to Barbara Dennerlein:

One of my personal goals is to do what I can to get Derek to record with Barbara Dennerlein. Like Derek, she is a musical sensation. I think peoples’ heads would explode of those two were ever on stage together ;-) .

She is well known here in Europe, but not so well in the US (beyond real jazz-heads). Thus I feel she could help bring Derek to a wider audience in Europe, and he could do the same for her in America - and man could they make music together.

Thanks for the info, Alan! And thanks for putting another DTB fan webpage out there. The info about Barbara Dennerlein is good, too. Fans of the DTB will definitely enjoy her organ chops.

Jerry Douglas: New Album the Best Kept Secret Out September 20th on KOCH Records

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

A press release about Jerry Douglas’ upcoming album mentions Derek Trucks:

Jerry Douglas: New Album the Best Kept Secret Out September 20th on KOCH Records

NEW YORK, NY — (MARKET WIRE) — 07/28/2005 — Virtuoso Jerry Douglas, a musician and creator whose dobro work has revolutionized an instrument and helped define American roots, country, and bluegrass music, has finished work on a solo album “The Best Kept Secret,” slated for release September 20th, 2005 on KOCH Records.

Kicking off with the slippery and driving groove of “She Makes Me Want To Sing” featuring fellow slide-master Derek Trucks, the album’s 11 tracks are the most ambitious and accessible work to date for Douglas, marking the masterwork of a key musical explorer and a testament to his evolving creative spirit.

It’s always great to hear Derek Trucks work with other musicians, so this is definitely an album to be on the lookout for.

Asheville Citizen-Times: Ticket sales hot for Blues Traveler tonight at Bele Chere

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

The Asheville Citizen-Times has an article about Bele Chere that mentions the Derek Trucks Band:

Ticket sales hot for Blues Traveler tonight at Bele Chere

ASHEVILLE [July 30, 2005] - Bele Chere’s big Saturday night concert starring Blues Traveler and the Derek Trucks Band is looking like a runaway hit.

As of 6 p.m., fewer than 2,500 tickets remained for the show at the Delta Air Lines Celebration Stage at the Renaissance Asheville parking lot out of 9,000 that were available, said Melissa Porter, festival coordinator.

I spent the weekend at Bele Chere and caught a lot of great music, including the Derek Trucks Band on Saturday night. Estimates put attendance for the DTB show between 7 and 10 thousand. Although Blues Traveler was the headliner, there were more than a few people leaving the area to check out other music once the DTB finished their set. It was a great show, with Susan Tedeschi appearing as a guest on several of the songs, and I look forward to featuring the show on an upcoming episode of Radio DTB.

Radio DTB on hiatus for a week or so

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

I know I haven’t been terribly faithful with keeping the weekly schedule of Radio DTB and I really am trying to improve on that. It’s just not going to happen in the next week or so — I’m extremely busy in my home and work life right now and my work with Radio DTB just has to take a seat on the back burner while I get caught up on these other things.

In the mean time, enjoy any of the previous podcasts or some of the shows available from archive.org.

I’ll be back in a week or so with a fresh new episode. I’m always open to suggestions for future episodes, so if you have any ideas, be sure to get in touch with me.
