Album Review: “Dance Around It,” Boxrockers

Sunday, May 29th, 2005

sunherld.com has an article (scroll to the bottom) about a new ablum from Boxrockers that mentions Kofi Burbridge, flutist for the Derek Trucks Band:

“Dance Around It,” Boxrockers

This recently released album is loaded with superstar guests, including drummer/Hendrix collaborator Buddy Miles, fiddle legend Vassar Clements, and flutist Kofi Burbridge from the Derek Trucks Band.

In fact, The Boxrockers (guitarist/vocalist John Kevin King, bassist/vocalist Matt Lawson, organist/vocalist Big Jim Syfrett, drummer/vocalist Robert Brown) welcome so many guests to the party that band identity is sometimes hard to focus on; however, this album of blues-based music will find a lot of fans, especially in the jam-band community.

Podcast Equipment Issues: RF Interference From My Mixer?

Friday, May 6th, 2005

Again, I apologize for the delay in getting this week’s podcast out. It’s late enough in the week to simply admit that there’s not going to be a podcast this week — Radio DTB #010 will be released next week. It will focus on the recent Derek Trucks Band show in Greensboro, NC.

The reason for the delay of this week’s podcast is that I’ve been fighting with some new recording equipment, attempting to get a higher quality sound for the podcast. I’ve detailed my struggles in my personal blog: RFI Rant and More RFI. The second blog entry includes some MP3 samples of different set-ups as well.

If any of my readers have any ideas as to what might be causing my recording troubles or, more to the point, any suggestions on how to eliminate or reduce the background noise (which I assume is RF interference), I’d be extremely grateful. Post your comments here, on the relevant entries of my personal blog, or send me an email if you have any advice.

Thanks for the patience — one way or another, Radio DTB #010 will come out next week even if it means that I need to use my old set-up with my cheap lapel mic instead of my new equipment.

I Know It’s Been Quiet, But We’re Still Here

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

I know things have been quiet here at Radio DTB, but I wanted to let you know that I’m still here and working on a new podcast. I really was hoping to have it up by now — I’ve just been having a hard time getting it together this week. I’ll give you the excuses: 1) I was out of town at a family reunion this weekend, 2) work has been busier than normal, and 3) I got some new recording equipment this weekend and I’m still trying to make it sound good when I record.

I’ve picked out the songs for the next podcast and even have the script already written, but I’m really having a difficult time getting my new microphone and mixer to get a decent recording — the mic is so sensitive that it’s picking up too much background noise on just about every setting I’ve tried, and if I try to do a “noise removal” filter in audacity, it makes my voice sound like a robot. I’ve spent the past 2 hours trying to get a decent voice recording and have come up with about 5 seconds of usable material.

I’m going to try again tomorrow. If I still can’t get it to work, I’ll have to either resort to my cheap lapel mic or skip this week’s podcast while I work out the kinks.

I’ve also got a handful of DTB-related news items to post, but I just haven’t had the time to put them out yet.

Sorry for the delays!
